They also contain a slight trinity of irony, in that it wasnt violence itself that swayed Pedrigano, it was the threat of v iolence or rather, it wasnt the action that acquired results, it was the words that implied possible action if results werent met. Lorenzo is portrayed throughout most of the play as a character of inaction. He is a man who employs techniques of trickery to make believe out his goals, but never takes direct authoritive action.

In this passage, for example, he subtly persuades Balthazar into seeking revenge on Horatio for taking the pump of the fair sex he loves. But it is revenge for himself that Lorenzo seeks; revenge against the man who outshone him in battle and who won his sisters heart. He thusly uses Balthazars anger and his own cunning wa! ys to carry out his desired result. Another trace of Lorenzo is portrayed in the line tam armis quam ingenio (line 107), which shows him to be a well educated and literate man.
